Recessed Hot Tub Removal: What Happens to the Opening?
Removing a spa that sits below the surrounding patio can leave an opening. The removal and the work needed to make that area ready for its next use are separate decisions. A documented Peoria project shows why the handoff should be discussed before the tub is hauled away.

Read the real before-and-after carefully
In the Peoria photographs, the same gazebo, palms and paver surround identify the spa location. The earlier image already shows the cabinet opened. The later image shows the spa removed and the square recessed area left in place. That is a useful removal result, but it is not a finished patio renovation.
This distinction matters when comparing quotes. A price described as hot tub removal may cover the spa and its agreed materials without covering a new base, fill, paving or drainage work. Ask what is included rather than inferring the answer from an attractive after photograph.
Plan the next use before the appointment
Think about whether the opening will receive a replacement spa, become a different patio feature or be filled as part of a later project. Reset does not need to design that project to quote the removal, but knowing that another contractor will follow helps define the handoff.
Have the appropriate contractor assess the opening and any work needed for the intended use. A photograph cannot establish what is below the spa or what construction requirements apply. Do not assume existing supports, drainage or surfaces will be suitable for a different installation once the tub is gone.
Show both the recess and the access route
For a quote, send a wide view of the spa within its surround and photographs of every side that can be safely viewed. Include any steps, ledges, deck edges or fixed structures that affect access. Show the route from the patio to the loading area as well as the tub itself.
Avoid leaning over or entering an opening just to gather photographs. Explain which surrounding materials must remain. The pictured project retained the patio surround; that fact does not authorize cutting or removing a different customer’s pavers, deck or enclosure.
Agree on a safe, specific handoff
The spa must be drained and safely disconnected before removal. Discuss access, included materials, appointment timing and the next contractor’s role before work starts. If temporary protection or a permanent finish is needed after removal, determine who will provide it.
A completion conversation should identify the spa material removed, the remaining opening and any retained supports or surfaces. Keep people and pets away from the recessed area until the responsible party has addressed the next stage. The goal is a clear handoff, with no assumption that hauling away a spa also completes the surrounding construction.
Photo-quote checklist
- Photograph the spa within the full patio or deck surround.
- Explain whether the surround stays and what additional items leave.
- Show steps, edges and the complete route to the loading area.
- Confirm drainage and safe disconnection before the removal appointment.
- Identify the person or contractor responsible for the opening afterward.
- Discuss the next use and preferred handoff timing before booking.
Questions before booking
Will the opening be filled automatically?
No. Filling, paving, structural work and landscaping are separate scope items unless specifically agreed. The documented Peoria job left the recess visible after the spa was removed.
Can you quote from photographs of the tub alone?
The surround and access are important parts of the review. Send wide views and route photographs, and say what remains unknown. A closer look may be needed before confirming the work.
Does the after photo prove the patio is ready to use?
It proves the visible spa-removal result at that stage. It does not prove that the opening has been repaired, protected or converted into a finished surface.
